UPDATE: Police locate theft suspect

Chatham-Kent police have identified a suspect in connection with the recent theft of a John Deere compact utility tractor from a residence on Center Side Road.

Officers are thanking the public for their help with the investigation.

Machete used to damage property during domestic incident

A 24-year-old Chatham man is facing a handful of charges after a violent outburst during an argument with his girlfriend over the weekend.

Police said they were notified of the incident Monday morning, adding that through their investigation, officers learned that the man had assaulted his girlfriend and damaged some property in the home with a machete.

Investigators said the woman who was assaulted needed medical attention for her injuries.

The accused was arrested Monday afternoon and charged with assault, aggravated assault, uttering threats, and weapons dangerous.

He was taken into custody pending a bail hearing.

Kitchen appliances reported stolen in Chatham

Chatham-Kent police are investigating after someone took off with a Samsung stainless steel refrigerator and dishwasher from a home under construction on Selkirk Street in Chatham.

Police said the damage caused by the break-in over the weekend was estimated at $1,000 and the stolen appliances are worth a combined $2,000.

ATV stolen in Camden Township

Police are also trying to track down an ATV that was taken from a garage on Dawn Mills Road near Dresden.

Investigators said a blue 2011 Arctic Cat 4-wheeler with Ontario license plate 95WC8, a Honda 1800w Inverter Generator, and a Husqvarna 41cc chain saw with an 18" blade were all reported stolen over the weekend.

Police believe they were taken sometime between 10 p.m. Friday and 5 a.m. Saturday.

Suspicious person call leads to arrest

A 50-year-old Chatham man is back in police custody after he was allegedly spotted out past his curfew overnight.

Police said they found the man after receiving a report at around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday of a suspicious man in the backyard of a residence on Elizabeth Street in Chatham.

The accused was arrested, charged with failing to comply with his release conditions, and taken into custody pending a bail hearing.

Police target distracted drivers

Chatham-Kent police are reminding drivers to put their phones down and to keep their attention on the road at all times.

Officers with the CKPS Traffic Unit will be focusing on distracted driving for the month of July -- specifically, people who are using cell phones while driving.

They have already stopped and charged nine drivers with that offence. The penalty for distracted driving can include a fine of $615, three demerit points, and a 3-day license suspension.
