Port-a-john, garbage dumpster on fire in Wallaceburg

Chatham-Kent police are looking for tips from the public as they investigate a pair of suspicious fires in Wallaceburg.

Police said the first call came in just before 8 a.m. Wednesday -- emergency crews responded to a report of a port-a-john on fire near Steinhoff Park on Mary Street. The damage in that case was estimated at $1,000.

Just a few minutes later, emergency crews were called to a second fire on Thomas Avenue near an apartment building. Police said some discarded furniture next to a garbage dumpster was going up in flames, adding the fire was put out quickly, but a vehicle next to the dumpster sustained some heat damage. The damage in the second case was estimated at $3,000.

UPDATE: Erieau house fire investigation continues

Chatham-Kent police said a post-mortem will be conducted in London Wednesday after a 73-year-old woman was found deceased in a burned-out home in Erieau early Tuesday morning.

The Ontario Fire Marshall’s Office attended the scene to help with determining the origin and cause of the fire, but no further information has been released on that yet.

Wanted man turns himself in

A 33-year-old Chatham man who was wanted by police after a chase earlier this month has turned himself in.

Police said officers initiated the pursuit in Chatham, but called it off before they could catch up with the suspect.

Investigators said the man who was wanted in connection with the case turned himself in at police headquarters Tuesday morning. He was then charged with disobeying a stop sign, flight from police, two counts of driving under suspension, and four counts of driving while prohibited.

He was set to be held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Police searching for rogue dirt bikers

Chatham-Kent police are looking for the public's help as they try to track down some dirt bikers who failed to stop for an officer who was conducting an investigation.

Police said the officer tried to stop them on Harwich Road on May 15 for some Highway Traffic Act infractions.

The drivers were last seen going into a bush lot near Sinclair Line.

Tools targeted during break-in

CK police are looking to track down some tools that were stolen after a break-in at an unlocked garage on McNaughton Avenue West in Chatham.

The following tools were reported stolen:

- Porter-Cable 18 gauge pneumatic brad nailer

- MasterCraft 164 piece socket set

- DeWalt 84 piece socket set

- DeWalt 18 gauge nailer

- DeWalt impact screw gun

- DeWalt circular saw

- Bosch belt sander

- 4 DeWalt batteries

The total value of the theft is estimated at $1,500.

Theft from local recovery and restoration business

Police are investigating after someone broke a window at Belfor Property Restoration on Hart Place in Chatham and took off with about $800 worth of property.

Officers were called to the scene at around 4 a.m. Wednesday after an alarm went off.
