Flood warning in effect for Shrewsbury and Erieau

Parts of Chatham-Kent are currently under a flood warning.

The Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority (LTVCA) issued the warning on Monday afternoon for the Rondeau Bay communities of Shrewsbury and Erieau.

According to conservation officials, there is already some water around homes and in some locations along the roads.

"Currently, strong sustained wind speeds of 40 with gust of 50 km/hour out of the east-northeast are creating waves on Rondeau Bay and sending them onshore in the communities of Shrewsbury and Erieau," stated the LTVCA in a release. "This has caused flooding in these communities with water around homes and even on the roads in some locations. Weather forecasts are calling for the winds to increase again this afternoon and remain strong enough to sustain the flooding all the way through until tomorrow evening."

People are being asked to avoid the area if possible.

The warning is in effect until Wednesday.

Meanwhile, a safety bulletin was also issued on Monday for the Thames River and local watercourses.

"The amount of rain still in the forecast could lead to ponding and localized flooding in areas with poor drainage," said the LTVCA. "Local ditches, creeks and streams have begun rising and some could still reach bank full conditions or spill their banks."

Residents are reminded to take extra caution and avoid the river, ditches, and streams.
