Walk for Alzheimer's goes online

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced another local fundraising event to go virtual.

The IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer's will still be taking place in Chatham-Kent, but it's going online on Sunday, May 31 at 12 p.m.

A local pre-walk show on Zoom will kick things off at 11:30 a.m.

"It's just a way for us to come together while still being apart, and also just honouring the people we're walking for," said Joel Emery, Fund Development/Admin Coordinator for the Alzheimer's Society of Chatham-Kent. "And then bringing in our sponsors, our walk ambassador, the mayor is also going to make an appearance just to share a few words about the walk like we would normally do."

The walk was originally scheduled to take place on Saturday, May 30th at the Civic Centre in Chatham. Emery said that participants don't have to just walk this year.

"The message that we're saying to our participants is move your own way. So whether you want to walk around your neighbourhood, dance in your living room, stretch it out with yoga, it's however you are most comfortable and doing something in a safe way."

All the money raised from the walk stays in Chatham-Kent.

"All the donations that we received throughout the year stay in Chatham-Kent and serve our community," said Emery. "So wherever the need is at the time, that's where the donations go. Whether it's to our counselling services, our respite services, or the day program, that's where our donations go."
