Plan approved for new Chatham subdivision

Chatham-Kent council is giving the green light to a possible new residential development in Chatham.

Located south of the Churchill Park Road and Earl Drive intersection, the subdivision is proposed to include 42 single-detached dwellings and six townhomes.

On Monday night, council approved the development's draft plan and a bylaw amendment to allow for the construction of single-detached, semi-detached and row house dwellings.

Because of the subdivision's close proximity to railway tracks, several noise reduction measures are being recommended included the installation of brick facades.  The development would also require new street and sidewalk construction. The plan includes an extension of Churchill Park Road, Kerr Avenue, Warwick Drive and one intersecting cul-du-sac.

A multi-unit residential building is also planned for the subdivision at a later time.

"The proposed development is within the Chatham Urban Boundary and is adjacent to existing built-up residential areas," stated the staff report. "The development is an efficient use of vacant residential designated lands that have access to full municipal services and are in close proximity to transit facilities and other public services. The proposed mix of low and medium-density housing will provide a range of housing options for residents."

Councillors passed the draft plan unanimously.
