Wallaceburg company shields healthcare workers

A manufacturing company in Wallaceburg has stepped up to produce and donate 25 plexiglass intubation shields for local and area hospital use.

1 Source Design Ltd., which typically manufactures trim dies and plastic injection tooling, was approached by municipal officials with the goal of providing frontline healthcare workers with extra protection amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Our economic development officers used their contacts within [the] local industry and Spencer Pray was able to reach out to 1 Source which moved extremely quickly to get the specifications and begin the process,” said Stuart McFadden, director of Economic Development. “We were thrilled with the response and that we were able to play a role to bring this together."

Graham Tomlinson, director of sales and engineering for 1 Source, said the intubation shields were ready to go after just 17 days since the municipality reached out.

“It isn’t easy to find plexiglass right now but we were able to search our suppliers and found one in Pennsylvania,” said Tomlinson in a statement.

According to a release from the municipality, the total cost of the project was in excess of $22,000.

"When we found out that there was a need, we had no idea that anyone would be generous enough to simply donate the devices,” said Mayor Darrin Canniff, who commended the company. “1 Source went above and beyond on this one and we’re extremely grateful.”
