Windy weather prompts flood watch

Strong winds in the forecast may cause flooding in some areas along the Lake Erie and Lake St. Clair shorelines, as well as Lighthouse Cove and Erie Shore Drive.

The Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority (LTVCA) issued a flood watch on Wednesday afternoon.

Winds may gust up to 65 kilometres per hour throughout the day Thursday and Friday and northwest winds may change to a southwest direction at times. Conservation officials said a change in wind direction could create waves up to one metre in height on Lake St. Clair and two metres in height on Lake Erie.

The wind direction will also determine if high bluff areas along Lake Erie will be affected. One of the most vulnerable areas is Erie Shore Drive, which just recently reopened to local traffic.

Residents who live along the shoreline are being reminded to be careful as lake conditions get rough.

The flood watch will remain in effect until Saturday.
