Student nutrition programs to continue offering support

Although kids are not at school due to the COVID-19 pandemic, nutrition programs that make sure children have full bellies throughout the year are still in place.

The United Way of Chatham-Kent, the Ontario Student Nutrition Program, and the CK Student Nutrition Program are working together to help those that rely on its services. This comes after the Minister of Education announced schools will be closed until at least May.

The local branch of the United Way said gift cards to buy food will go toward supporting families who have school-aged children enrolled in Chatham-Kent schools. A $20 gift card will be given for two kids and $10 will be added for each additional child within a household.

“With limited resources, United Way is continuously watching our levels of government so we can align our work where there may be gaps. Our capacity to support in this time of need will depend on the generosity of our donors and partners, and the ability of the community to be generous during this difficult time,” said Steve Pratt, chief executive officer of the United Way of Chatham-Kent. “Behind the scenes, we are working to united with the community to help finance food relief for the at-risk and organizing human resources so they are at the ready."

Families who need a little extra help are encouraged to contact a local food bank or visit ontario211.ca.

The United Way said it's estimated that $100,000 will be needed "to address the food security needs of Chatham-Kent’s families, food banks, and frontline-agencies."

In order to limit the spread of COVID-19, the United Way is asking willing residents to donate money or gift cards. To donate visit ckgives.ca or call (519) 354-0430.
