Man banned from driving leads police on chase

A 31-year-old Chatham man with a history of driving offences is in more trouble with police now after allegedly leading an officer on a chase just outside of Blenheim.

Chatham-Kent police said their investigation started when an officer on general patrol spotted a green Jeep heading westbound on Talbot Trail West in Blenheim at around 11 a.m.

The officer recognized the vehicle and knew that it wasn't insured, so he followed it down Talbot Trail and turned on his emergency lights near Lagoon Road. The driver that the officer was trying to pull over didn't stop right away, though. Police said the vehicle eventually pulled over near Gore Road, but when the officer asked the driver to put the vehicle in park and shut off the engine, the driver reversed and took off again, this time heading east towards Blenheim.

The accused was arrested a short time later at a home in Blenheim.

At that time, police also learned that not only was the man driving without the registered owner's permission, but he was also banned from driving because of previous offences of driving while disqualified, dangerous driving, and not paying his fines.

The accused was charged accordingly and later released with conditions and a future court date.

From there, the man reportedly took off running and dumped the items in a nearby recycling bin. Police were able to recover the stolen property and returned the items to the employee.
