Maintaining mental health during a pandemic

Taking care of your mental health can be tough while social distancing and self-isolating.

So the Canadian Mental Health Association has some tips for anyone who might be struggling during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Staying connected to friends and family," said Megan Walker, a Mental Health Promotion Specialist with CMHA Lambton-Kent and ACCESS Open Minds. "It might look like a different way than you normally would, but trying to use social media, calling people you haven't talked to in a while, video chat. Try to maintain that connectedness while social distancing."

"Healthy habits, like eating, sleeping, exercise, getting outside. We've had a lot of nice days the last couple of days this week. Still going out for walks and getting out with nature is really helpful for our mental health as well," added Walker.

Avoiding information overload is also very important.

"Try to limit how much media exposure or social media we're taking in," said Walker. "Obviously listening to credible sources is really important to get our information, but definitely check in with yourself and kind of know when to shut some of that off and give yourself a break."

When it comes to children and mental health, Walker recommends keeping a routine, and answering any questions they have.

"Developing your own new routine. Definitely giving them a lot of love and support, and as appropriate, providing them with facts and information, and kind of explain what's happening without again providing too much for them."

The CMHA offices in Chatham are closed, but you can still reach out for help at any time. Walker said their first response team is answering phones, and there are free resources available online.

"If you want some strategies and tips to work through on your own pace, Bounce Back is an awesome resource through CMHA Ontario. Previously you had to have a doctor's referral to get connected to workbooks and online coach. Now in light of the situation, they're kind of waiving that component."
