Canada to close borders, with exceptions

The Prime Minister of Canada has announced new measures to keep Canadians safe from COVID-19.

At a news conference on Monday afternoon, Justin Trudeau said Canada is denying entry to visitors but not to U.S. citizens or immediate family members of Canadian citizens and permanent residents. The Prime Minister also said incoming international flights from several countries will be funnelled through four airports in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and Calgary starting on Wednesday for better screening. However, the restrictions do not apply to trade and business flights or those from the U.S., Mexico, the Caribbean or Saint Pierre and Miquelon.

Trudeau is also asking airlines to prevent travellers with COVID-19 symptoms from flying. He added the latest measures are based on the latest medical advice.

"This means that anyone who has symptoms will not be able to come to Canada," said the prime minister.

Trudeau said the border restrictions don't apply to trade or commerce. Trudeau said the spread of COVID-19 can still be stopped but that window is closing.

"Canadian travellers should return to Canada via commercial means while it is still possible to do so. Let me be clear. If you're abroad, it's time for you to come home. If you just arrived, you must self-isolate for 14 days," he added.

Trudeau said he realizes there's much more Canada can do to keep Canadians safe and is providing support for those who are healthy and abroad to return home.

"Canadian travellers will be able to get financial assistance to help them with the costs of returning home or temporarily covering their basic needs while they wait to come back to Canada," Trudeau said.

Prime Minister Trudeau said he understands the criticism and the frustration of some Canadians for not reacting quicker but added the situation is evolving extremely quickly.

Trudeau also announced there are details coming in the next few days to support businesses and vulnerable families.
