Councillor pushes for new crosswalk on Grand Avenue West

A new crosswalk could be coming to one of Chatham's main streets.

Councillor Brock McGregor will be bringing forward a motion during Monday night's council meeting requesting a pedestrian controlled crosswalk be installed on Grand Avenue West in front of the Village on the Thames retirement home.

According to McGregor, residents have expressed concerns about the lack of a crosswalk in the area for a while now.

"It's been brought up to council before and there's been some interested groups that want to see a crosswalk in that location," he said. "It's been something that's been on the radar and just hasn't been completed yet."

Grand Avenue West currently only has one controlled crossing for pedestrians -- located at the intersection of Keil Drive. McGregor said he knows Grand Avenue West can be a quick-moving street that is difficult to cross.

Paired with more development happening on the west side of Chatham, McGregor said he felt it was the perfect time to bring the crosswalk up.

"There's been some commercial development near that corner," he said. "Right where the crosswalk would go it's adjacent to a retirement residence. Then a number of apartment buildings across the street, there's the medical building there. It's just down the street from St. Clair College."

The crosswalk would feature flashing lights to alert motorists of pedestrians crossing. McGregor's motion also requests that $60,000 come from strategic reserves to fund the project.
