Local track stars medal at provincials, look to national stage

Chatham's James Muharrem has cleared his final hurdle on the way to the USports National Championships.

Muharrem -- who competes for the Guelph Gryphons -- won a silver medal in the men's 60-metre hurdles at the OUA Track and Field Championships at York University in Toronto over the weekend, finishing in a personal-best time of 8.19 seconds.

That was fast enough to qualify him for the national championships, which are taking place from March 5-7 at the University of Alberta in Edmonton.

The Men's 60m hurdles' initial heats at the competition are set to take place on Day 2 (Friday, March 6) with the finals to follow that on the same day.

Muharrem could also be joined by fellow Chathamite Anthony Atkinson, who competes for the University of Windsor in men's weight throw.

Atkinson won the bronze medal at the OUA Track and Field Championships with a throw of 16.07m. His best throw for the season is 16.91m, which he accomplished at the Youngstown State Mid-Major Invite at the end of January.

That throw was good enough for Atkinson to rank fifth overall ahead of the USports National Championships.
