Families fish for free

Families will be able to cast their lines into the water this weekend without having to worry about associated costs or licences.

The Ontario government is letting people fish for free over the Family Day long weekend, from Saturday through to Monday.

"Our government is making it easier for families to spend quality time together while enjoying Ontario's world-class lakes, rivers and streams," said John Yakabuski, Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry.

The Family Day long weekend kicks off a list of upcoming license-free fishing weekends this year. Residents will be able to fish for free again over the Mother's and Father's Day weekends, and during Family Fishing Week in July.

However, the offer to fish without a licence is available year-round for Ontarians who are veterans or are active members of the Canadian Armed Forces.
