Man ditches shirt, jacket in attempt to escape

A 31-year-old man who was wanted by Chatham-Kent police almost managed to pull off a quick getaway Tuesday afternoon.

Police said an officer on general patrol spotted the man on James Street in Chatham and attempted to arrest him, but the suspect was allegedly able to break free by quickly removing his shirt and jacket.

Officers said the accused didn't get very far, though -- he was arrested after "a short foot chase".

The man was initially wanted for obstructing police, mischief, failing to attend court and for fingerprinting -- he was additionally charged with resisting arrest and escaping lawful custody.

He was taken into custody pending a bail hearing.

Vehicle reported stolen in Wallaceburg

Chatham-Kent police are appealing to the public for tips as they try to track down a dark blue 2005 Dodge Durango that was reported stolen from a residence on Dufferin Avenue in Wallaceburg.

Police said it was reportedly taken sometime between midnight and 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. It was last seen with Ontario license plates BWWD 435.

Charges laid after crashes

A 26-year-old Chatham man is finding out the hard way that pedestrians don't rule the road.

Chatham-Kent police said the man was charged with failing to use a crosswalk after he was hit by a vehicle on Sandys Street between Sudbury Drive and Oxley Drive in Chatham.

Police were called to the scene at around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. Officers said the man was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

In a separate case about 30 minutes earlier, police were called to a two-vehicle crash on Dufferin Avenue between Highway 40 and Mirwin Road in Wallaceburg.

Officers said in that case, no injuries were reported, the damage was estimated at $2,500 and the driver at fault was charged with careless driving.
