Stormy weather prompts tips to keep residents safe

Given recent weather conditions in southwestern Ontario, officials with Entegrus are reminding customers of the dos and don'ts during a flood or power outage.

Environment Canada issued a rainfall warning on Friday, calling for strong wind gusts and approximately 50 millimetres of rain over the weekend. The weather conditions may also cause flooding for some areas.

Should a basement flood occur, Entegrus has provided some tips to help keep residents safe.

"If there is water in your basement and you think it has risen above any electrical outlets, baseboard heaters, furnaces, or is near your electrical panel... do not enter your basement," said Tracy Richmond, health and safety assistant at Entegrus. "Electricity can move through water -- or even wet flooring can cause a severe electrical shock."

Residents who have flooded basements are advised to call Entegrus so they can shut off the power at no charge.

Richmond said typically flooded basements aren't something they encounter often in January, however, they will receive those types of calls during the winter thaw and springtime.

Aside from potential flooding, wind conditions may cause some power outages or downed powerlines, in which case, residents are asked to be patient.

"If you see a downed powerline, it's very important that you stay at least 10 metres away and call 911 to report it so no one gets injured," she said.
