Chatham family issues emotional plea for support

There's been an emotional plea for help from the family of Natasha Smids.

The 20-year-old worker was critically injured in a horrific accident at Truly Green Farms in Chatham on Monday.

Her uncle, Jeff Hopman, has set up a GoFundMe page asking for support. The goal is to raise $2,500 and all proceeds will now go to Natasha's future needs and not to cover the family's transportation and other costs originally planned while Natasha is at London Health Sciences Centre.

"Natasha was airlifted to London where she will be staying in the hospital there for the foreseeable future. The outlook is unclear as she's still in an induced coma and while we're hopeful for a generous recovery, it's unclear what the future holds," he said. "As most of you know from your own personal experiences, things like this become a financial burden. Trips to and from the hospital, lodging, gas, food, time off work, all can take its toll financially."

London Health Sciences Centre told Blackburn News Wednesday afternoon that Natasha remains in critical condition.

Hopman said he has had a lot of people asking how they can help.

"To put it simply, this is how. I know personally I've felt helpless in this situation, or when someone else is going through some adversity, but donating always seems to make me feel like I at least did something," he said.

Hopman said there's no minimum or maximum donation.

"Just please consider helping," he added.

Hopman said the entire family greatly appreciates all the thoughts and prayers that have come their way.
