New allegation levelled against Chatham ophthalmologist

A new allegation has been submitted to the discipline committee that is looking into a Chatham eye doctor accused of professional misconduct.

The latest submission from the Inquiries, Complaints, and Reports Committee of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) accuses Dr. Christopher Anjema of engaging in "disgraceful, dishonourable or unprofessional conduct in his communications" with a specific unnamed patient referred to as Patient 'A' "regarding medical services offered to the patient, including uninsured services."

That allegation, dated December 11, 2019, was submitted to the CPSO's Discipline Committee for an upcoming hearing, which has yet to be scheduled.

The current referral from the Inquiries, Complaints, and Reports Committee also noted that "additional information about the allegations against Dr. Anjema will be provided in advance of the hearing."

Dr. Anjema has previously been accused of disgraceful, dishonourable or unprofessional conduct, but the latest submission is the first time the referral has included a reference to a specific patient.

In an emailed statement, the Anjema Eye Institute said it had not received any details about the most recent CPSO investigation.

"This will be dealt with by the college in its current process which is occurring as expected. Dr. Anjema will continue to fully cooperate with the college and participate in its process which is the appropriate way to address such matters," the institute said in the statement. "The doctor looks forward to providing comprehensive facts regarding allegations which he is confident will result in an evidence-based outcome in the interests of the thousands of patients whom he is proud to serve."
