Pair of alleged impaired drivers arrested in Chatham

Two local men are facing charges after they were allegedly caught drinking and driving in Chatham-Kent.

Police said a 66-year-old Chatham man was charged after police were called to a two-vehicle crash on Queen Street near Sunnyside Avenue in Chatham.

Officers who arrived at the scene Thursday night believed that one of the drivers involved in the crash was under the influence of alcohol, so they obtained some breath tests, which allegedly registered at twice the legal limit.

In the second case, a 25-year-old man from Blenheim was charged after police received a report of a man asleep behind the wheel of a running vehicle in Chatham.

Officers said they received that call at around 2 a.m. Friday, adding that the vehicle was locked and they couldn't wake the man up by knocking on the window, so they broke through it to make sure he was OK.

Police believed the man was under the influence of alcohol, so they arrested him. When he provided breath tests, they allegedly registered more than twice the legal limit.

Both of the accused were charged with impaired driving and released with a court date. In both cases, that was set for Christmas Eve -- December 24, 2019.
