Chatham Towing ready for TV debut

The crews at Chatham Towing are ready for their close up.

They're set to be featured on the upcoming season of Heavy Rescue: 401.

A film crew followed them last winter from November until March, and it didn't take long to get used to the cameras being around.

"It was actually quite interesting to see how they do things because they don't get in the way or anything," said Chatham Towing owner John Verkaik. "They have these portable magnetic cameras that they mount to the different parts of the units. They definitely didn't get in our way or anything, mind you, sometimes even with their extra lights on it helped up out at night time."

Verkaik said the TV crew records footage from Windsor to London and on Highway 402 to Sarnia.

"If we've got four guys in the crew, they've usually got four or five guys here as well," said Verkaik. "It takes guys to put the cameras on and other guys to do the vocal end of it."

Verkaik said the show also gives people a better understanding of what tow truck drivers do.

"The people, once they've been watching this on TV, it's surprising how much more interest they took in tow trucks of what they do out there," said Verkaik. "We're right in the live lane of traffic and you're trying to work there, and now all of a sudden they see what we do, people are actually listening to the move over law."

Season four of Heavy Rescue: 401 will start airing in January on Discovery, and Verkaik said the film crews are already back in the area to film for season five.

The public will also have a chance to meet the stars of the show on Saturday, November 23 during a fundraising event for Chatham Goodfellows.

"We'll take some of the kids for a ride, kids love to go for a ride in tow trucks," said Verkaik. "Then all we ask for is people to bring some canned goods or something for the Goodfellows because the main thing is we don't want to see anybody do without Christmas."

Chatham-Kent police, fire, EMS, and OPP will also have emergency vehicles on display from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Chatham Towing on Richmond Street in Chatham.
