Accused shoplifter arrested in Chatham

A 31-year-old Chatham woman is facing charges after she was allegedly caught stealing some items from a local women's fashion boutique.

Chatham-Kent police said employees at the store on King Street West saw the woman stealing some items Tuesday afternoon, adding there was a struggle as the employees tried to stop her from leaving.

An off-duty officer happened to be in the area and was able to help to prevent the woman from getting away.

The accused was arrested, charged with theft and possession of stolen property, and later released with conditions and a future court date.

Out past his curfew with brass knuckles

A dark late-night bike ride turned out to be a bad idea for a local man who was supposed to stay inside between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Police said an officer on general patrol stopped the man on Harvey Street in Chatham at around 3:45 a.m. Wednesday after seeing him riding a bike on West Street without a light on it.

Investigators said the officer attempted to arrest the man after learning that he was out past his curfew, but the suspect allegedly pulled away and took off running.

He was stopped a short time later and taken into custody.

Police said they also found some brass knuckles on him when they searched him -- that violated another one of his release conditions, which banned him from possessing any weapons.

A 39-year-old Chatham man was charged with resisting arrest, possession of a banned weapon, and two counts of failing to comply with his release conditions.

He was taken into custody pending a bail hearing.

Crashes lead to charges

A 38-year-old Chatham man is charged with failing to yield the right of way in connection with a three-vehicle crash on Park Avenue East near Queen Street in Chatham.

That crash took place at around 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Officers said no one was hurt, but the damages were estimated at $21,000.

About an hour later, just before 4 p.m. Tuesday, police were called to the scene of a two-vehicle crash on Sandys Street near Oxley Drive in Chatham.

No one was hurt in that crash, either.

The damages were estimated at $5,000 and the driver at fault was charged with disobeying a stop sign.
