Chatham-Kent native T.J. Brodie is recovering at home but will have to undergo further evaluations following Thursday's "episode" on the ice.
The Calgary Flames held a media conference on Friday to go over Brodie's status. The defenceman collapsed during practice on Thursday and was sent to the hospital for an evaluation. Eventually, Brodie was cleared to go home with his family.
General Manager Brad Treliving described the situation as "scary" and "emotional" for everyone involved. However, after speaking with Brodie prior to the media conference, Treliving said Brodie is doing well.
"He's feeling good, he's sore," he said. "All of the tests that have been done to date have come back negative."
There are still some tests Brodie will have to go through "to check off all the boxes."
Dr. Ian Auld -- who was also on hand during the conference -- said it's tough to narrow down for certain at this point why Brodie collapsed.
"An event like this can be caused by something inside the brain -- something scary. It can also be caused by something we call syncopal or fainting episodes. The reasons for why people faint are many and dehydration certainly could be one of them," said Auld. "I don't think we have all of the answers yet. We do have a few more tests to go but all of the early indications are that it's very likely more related to a fainting episode than something significant and inside the brain."
Dr. Auld did not go into specifics regarding which tests have yet to be done but did mention that Brodie will see a neurology team and a general internal medicine specialist.
Treliving said Brodie will not be travelling with the team as it heads to Arizona for Saturday's game against the Coyotes. There's also no set timetable for when Brodie will return to the ice.
