Lancers scout out competition in Windsor ahead of SWOSSAA

The UCC Lancers' senior boys' football team will be keeping a close eye on a high school championship game in Windsor on Thursday.

Holy Names High School's team will face off against W.F. Herman Academy at the University of Windsor in their regional final at 7 p.m. with the winner going on to face UCC at SWOSSAA.

Lancers head coach Scott Morkin said they'll be sending a scouting party of sorts down to the game to get a look at the competition.

"We'll send as many members of our coaching staff down as we can get there," said Morkin. "I'm sure there will be some of the boys from our team who will be curious and wanting to go down there to see what they're up against as well."

But as the team looks ahead to next week, Morkin said they are also still riding high after a big win in the LKSSAA final against the CKSS Golden Hawks in Chatham over the past weekend.

"This is the most well-rounded team we've had in years," said Morkin. "We've got a lot of weapons in our backfield... these kids have played a long time together and what the assistant coaches have done with these guys is absolutely incredible."

The Lancers capped off an undefeated season in LKSSAA with a perfect playoff run, beating St. Patrick’s Catholic High School (Sarnia) 7-0 in the semi-final before taking down rival Chatham-Kent Secondary School Golden Hawks 33-14 in last Saturday's final. That win also marked the first time a Chatham-Kent team has won the senior boys' championship at LKSSAA since the association was formed in 2014.

Morkin said he's very proud of how far the team has already come, but he's also confident they can continue their win streak in Windsor next week.

"This is a game they haven't played in... this is an opportunity for them to make history at our school," said Morkin. "We've got tremendous leadership... Evan Torres, our quarterback, is a pretty special leader in our group and he makes us different as well."

The Lancers' next game will be on the road in Windsor next week on Thursday, November 22 at 4 p.m.
