Attempted murder suspect granted bail

An attempted murder suspect from Wallaceburg has been released on bail.

Michael Authier, 33, was released from jail on $100,000 bail on Thursday. Justice D. Isaac imposed strict bail conditions on Authier, including being with his sureties at all times, living with his parents, and getting treatment for his drug issues. He is also to have no contact with his alleged victim and several other people, is not allowed to possess any weapons, and is not allowed to carry or consume any drugs.

Authier is accused of shooting an 18-year-old woman on February 26, 2019 at King and Albert Streets in Wallaceburg. His next court appearance will be November 27, 2019.

Authier smiled when he was released and hugged a family member on the way out of the Chatham courtroom.

Justice Isaac told the court she was concerned about public confidence before making her decision but felt confident that Authier's father and brother would make good sureties.

"I'm concerned about the [alleged] use of a firearm," she said. " I'm also concerned about the unaddressed drug issues."

Authier's father and brother will be putting up $25,000 each while Authier himself is responsible for $50,000 of his own bail money. The father told the justice he will revoke his bail if his son doesn't get treatment.

Authier could spend a maximum of life in prison and a minimum of four years if convicted.

The case is under a publication ban and more details can’t be released to the public until after the trial.
