CK police seize drugs and guns from crime-infested building

Chatham-Kent police officers have taken a bunch of drugs and guns off the street thanks to the new owner of an apartment complex in Chatham.

Police said 15 people were arrested, 25 charges were laid, and four prohibited weapons were seized from an apartment building at 190 Thames St. during the execution of four search warrants over the past 70 days.

Thirteen of the charges are drug related.

Police said levels of criminal and drug-related activity have increased at that location over the past 18 months and officers have worked hard to solve the problems at the apartment complex.

Constable Renee Cowell, Public Information Officer with the Chatham-Kent Police Service, said the new owner took over in September and quickly partnered with police to rid the building of criminal and drug-related activity.

"The process is ongoing, but significant progress has been made in less than 70 days since the change in ownership," she said.

Police chief Gary Conn said this partnership between the police and the property ownership has sent a clear message that this type of behaviour is unacceptable and that the police and building owner are committed to removing drugs and criminal activity from this location.

“The same is true throughout Chatham-Kent. The Chatham-Kent Police Service, in conjunction with property owners and community partners, are committed to removing drugs and targeting criminal activity wherever it is happening,” the chief said.
