Driver and passenger both charged after crash

Two Chatham residents in their 20s are facing charges after they were involved in a two-vehicle crash on McNaughton Avenue near Taylor Avenue in Chatham Monday afternoon.

Police said no one was hurt as a result of the crash but while officers were investigating, they learned that the driver of one of the vehicles wasn't supposed to be communicating with his female passenger.

As a result, a 27-year-old Chatham man was charged with failing to comply with his release conditions. Police said he was also charged with "failing to turn left to avoid a collision" in connection with the crash.

His passenger, a 24-year-old Chatham woman, was charged with owning a vehicle and allowing it to be driven with no insurance.

Out past curfew, caught with cocaine

A 34-year-old Chatham man is in more trouble with police after allegedly trying to pass a plastic container with cocaine in it to his girlfriend while he was being arrested.

Police said an officer on general patrol stopped the man after finding him in a parking lot on Richmond Street in Chatham at around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Investigators said the officer who was speaking with the man learned that he was out past his curfew, so he arrested him. That's when the man allegedly tried to pass the drugs to his girlfriend.

The accused was charged with drug possession and failing to comply with his release conditions. He was taken into custody pending a bail hearing.
