Flag raising celebrates youth organization

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent is showing support for the local 4-H.

On Wednesday afternoon, a flag was raised at the Civic Centre in Chatham in support of 4-H Chatham-Kent and the kick-off of the organization's national Show Your 4-H Colours campaign.

According to Stephanie Campbell, 4-H coordinator of volunteer support, the not-for-profit organization has 24,000 members across Canada and 220 in Chatham-Kent. It offers several youth-centred programs with the aim to build confidence and inspire young people to become leaders.

At the start of every November, 4-H members wear green for The Show Your 4-H Colours campaign to help spread awareness of the group's mission.

Campbell said it feels great to see the flag up at the Civic Centre and she hopes it's able to bring attention to the organization's mission.

"We're very excited to see it flying," she said. "Our goal is to bring awareness to the program and hopefully have our youth within Chatham-Kent celebrated."

Campbell said the local 4-H branch heard about members in another city who got their flag flown at the local municipal building. That's when 4-H Chatham-Kent reached out to municipal officials to see if they could do the same.

"Our municipality is so great at supporting local organizations, especially those who support youth," said Campbell. "We are very grateful to have that."
