CK fire officials issue reminder ahead of time-change

Chatham-Kent Fire and Emergency Services is once again encouraging residents to check the smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors in one's home.

The reminder comes as Daylight Saving Time comes to an end this weekend. The clocks will go back an hour at 2 a.m. on Sunday.

With the routine task of checking the time, officials with the local fire department also ask that people check the alarms in their homes, which should have their batteries replaced at least once a year.

“Most alarms have a battery of some sort; certain alarms rely completely on batteries to operate, while others use batteries as back-up to their hardwired connection,” said Public Educator Whitney Burk. “Either way, it’s essential to having working batteries in your alarms and the best way to guarantee this is to replace them.”

As stated in a media release, it’s the law to have working smoke alarms on every storey of the home and outside of all sleeping areas. Carbon monoxide detectors must be installed outside of all sleeping areas if your home has a fuel-burning appliance, fireplace or attached garage.
