Two suspects accused of stealing from senior

A 41-year-old woman and a 65-year-old woman -- both Chatham residents -- after an elderly woman noticed that her bank statement was in overdraft.

Police said the two women know the victim, adding that she had trusted them to purchase some items for her on occasion.

Officers said their investigation showed that the two women had allegedly taken the elderly woman's debit card from her wallet without her permission and used it at an ATM on multiple occasions in August to withdraw more than $3,000 from the victim's account.

Police tracked down the accused yesterday, arrested them, and then charged them both with ten counts of theft of a credit card and ten counts of theft.

They were both later released with conditions and a future court date.

Charges laid after traffic stop in Ridgetown

Four Ridgetown residents are finding out the hard way how much you can get fined for not wearing a seatbelt.

Police said they charged all of the teens after pulling over a pickup truck on Jane Street in Ridgetown Monday afternoon. Officers said none of the occupants were properly secured and two of them were allegedly riding in the truck bed -- one of them was even standing up at the time.

The driver -- a 20-year-old Ridgetown woman -- was charged with failing to properly wear a seat belt, failing to produce an insurance card, and failing to produce a driver's license. Her passenger -- a 19-year-old Ridgetown woman -- was charged with failing to properly wear a seat belt.

Police said the two people riding in the back of the pickup were both charged with failing to occupy a position with a seat belt.

The seat belt fines are $200 each.

Police said they laid the charges as part of National Teen Driver Safety Week, during which time officers will be focusing on monitoring and educating young drivers across the community.
