Time ticking on water meter replacement

The deadline is looming to replace water meters in Chatham-Kent.

The municipality said residents who have not made an appointment to have their water meters replaced by October 31 risk paying additional fees if their meters are not replaced. Replacement is mandatory.

Tim Sunderland, general manager of the Chatham-Kent Public Utilities Commission (CK PUC), said the mandatory water meter replacement program is more than 95 per cent complete but some residents still have not participated in the program.

“Thanks to the widespread cooperation for the project, we have installed more than 34,000 meters,” Sunderland said. “Unfortunately we have some residents who haven’t responded. Our installation contractor has staff ready to complete the project but we can’t keep them here indefinitely so we need to wrap this up.”

Sunderland said the new meters will allow more accurate and timely readings which in turn will allow CK PUC to reduce the number of estimated bills, decrease water loss, provide better customer service, and move from quarterly to monthly readings. He added homeowners will be able to easily identify a water or toilet leak in their home, which will reduce water bills and help save homeowners money.

CK PUC said the replacement is done in 30-45 minutes and appointments can be made from Monday to Friday between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Click here to book an appointment or call 1-800-667-4387 for a convenient time.
