Roof leak closes Park Avenue Business Centre

The municipality of Chatham-Kent's Park Avenue Business Centre is closed this week after a "significant" leak in the roof.

According to Evelyn Bish, director of community attraction and leisure services, the roof is currently being redone which led to the leak being discovered on Saturday.

The building houses staff in the recreation services and programs department, the recreation facilities department, as well as community attraction and promotion staff. The leak has forced the centre to the closed to the public and has caused around 30 municipal staff members to be relocated.

Bish said they are hoping to have it fixed by the end of the week, depending on the weather.

"It's just the businesses at the front," she explained. "It's basically things like carpentry and ceiling tiles, that type of thing. So we're just in the process of getting everything dried out and we're certainly hoping to be up and running by the end of this week."

All of the services will still be accessible. Cemetery staff have been relocated to the Public Works Building located at the back of the Park Avenue Business Centre. Recreation services can be accessed online, at local service centres, or by calling 519-360-1998. Community attraction and promotion staff will be providing coverage from the Civic Centre in Chatham while visitor information brochure racks are available at all municipal centres and CK Public Library locations.

"None of our services are going to be stopped," said Bish. "We're just continuing them on in another fashion."

Bish adds that the second floor of the business centre, where training services take place, remains functional.

The offices will remain closed this week while an assessment of the damage is undertaken.
