Search in Chatham turns up cannabis grow-op

Three people are facing charges after Chatham-Kent police busted an illegal indoor cannabis grow operation in Chatham.

Police said they executed a search warrant at the residence on an undisclosed street in Chatham on Tuesday.

Officers were reportedly looking for "items related to an offence under the Cannabis Act" and that's what they allegedly found.

Police said some of the plants had already been harvested and the grow-op was partially dismantled by the time officers got there. During their search, police also reportedly found some psilocybin (magic mushrooms).

A 33-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman -- both from Chatham -- were arrested, charged with possession of a controlled substance and then released with conditions and a future court date.

A 27-year-old Chatham woman was also arrested at the scene. She was charged with drug possession and failing to comply with her release conditions and then released with conditions and a future court date.

Fraud warning from police

Chatham-Kent police are warning residents to be wary of a specific phone call scam that's making its way around right now.

Officers said it involves someone calling you and then threatening to arrest you if you don't provide them with some specific personal information.

Police said they "would like to remind everyone that personal or financial information should never be given to anyone over the phone or Internet unless you can confirm their legitimacy."

Officers said fraudsters will use your personal information to steal your money and commit crimes in your name.

You can find more information on types of fraud and how to protect yourself on the anti-fraud centre's website.

She wasn't living where she was supposed to

A 40-year-old woman was arrested early Wednesday morning for allegedly moving out of her residence without telling police.

Officers said they caught up with the woman while they were responding to a disturbance call on Thames Street in Chatham. At that time, they learned that she was no longer living at the last address that police had on file -- even though she was previously ordered to notify police in writing prior to any change in address.

She was arrested, charged, and held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Arrests on warrants

A 29-year-old Chatham man who was wanted for breaching his conditional sentence turned himself in Tuesday morning. Police said he was arrested and taken to the courthouse pending a bail hearing.

In a separate case, police arrested a 51-year-old Chatham man on Princess Street at around 5 p.m. Tuesday -- he was wanted on a surety relief warrant. The accused was arrested and taken to a local detention centre.
