Cyclists arrested after dark

Two people who both went out for a bike ride after the sun went down are facing charges now after their cycling habits caught the attention of police.

Police said the first suspect, a 35-year-old Chatham man, was first spotted riding a bicycle in the area of Spencer Avenue in Chatham at around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday. The cyclist was allegedly riding around without proper lights on his bike, so an officer tried to stop him, but he allegedly took off, eventually jumping off of his bike and then running away through some backyards.

Officers said the man was later found hiding in a backyard and arrested. He also allegedly resisted arrest before he was taken into custody.

Police said they later learned that the man was wanted on "a number of warrants". He was charged with obstructing police and taken into custody pending a bail hearing.

In the second case, police arrested a 36-year-old Chatham man after he allegedly committed a traffic offence while he was riding around on Richmond Street in Chatham at around 3:20 a.m. Wednesday.

Officers said after they learned who the man was, they also found out that he was wanted for failing to comply with a probation order. Police said they allegedly found some suspected methamphetamine on him, too.

He was arrested and taken into custody for the outstanding warrant and then charged with an additional count of drug possession.
