Maroons dim Stars 6-5 in double-overtime

Griffin Robinson scored twice, including the game-winner, in the Chatham Maroons' 6-5 double-overtime win over the Stars in St. Thomas Friday night.

The Maroons improved to 3-2-1-2 on the season and moved into a fourth-place tie with the LaSalle Vipers in the GOJHL Western Conference.

The two teams exchanged goals in the first period. Robinson put Chatham on the board first at 9:04 for his fourth goal of the season. Precisely three minutes later, St. Thomas tied it up with a score by Darius Mani, his first of the year.

Evan Wells briefly put the Maroons back on top 2-1 with a shorthanded goal just 27 ticks gone in the second period. That lead evaporated near the midway point with a power-play lamplighter from the Stars' Kolby Poulin. Maddux Rychel then scored back-to-back goals just over two minutes apart, giving Chatham a 4-2 lead. Jake Robinson cut the lead for St. Thomas later in the frame, but the Maroons regained the two-goal advantage thanks to Dallas Maurovic.

St. Thomas goalie Lucas Bain left after the first 40 minutes and was replaced with Jack Randall. The Stars scored two goals in the third period to tie the game and force overtime. Jordan Hurtubise scored on the power play; then Brock Trichilo evened the game with a short-handed goal.

The first overtime period passed without a winner, but Chatham outshot St. Thomas 5-1. The overtime winner was scored at just 20 seconds into the second extra period.

Noah Zeppa stopped 48 shots for Chatham between the pipes. Bain and Randall had 27 saves between the two of them for St. Thomas.

The two teams meet again at Chatham Memorial Arena on Sunday night.
