Downtown Chatham will be extra bright this holiday season

Chatham-Kent is already getting into the Christmas spirit.

Plans are underway for a Disney-like Christmas light display this holiday season in downtown Chatham called, "Home for the Holidays". It will be the area's first-ever Christmas light show of this kind. Mayor Darrin Canniff teased a large crowd of businesspeople at a function on Friday with some of the details. He said the first display will be at the armoury in downtown Chatham but there are opportunities to eventually have more displays spread throughout Chatham-Kent at other downtown locations.

"We've already got a bunch of organizations who are stepping up and saying this is an amazing idea, let's do it. We want to spread this across Chatham-Kent into all communities," said Canniff.

Canniff added he wants to expand the event over the next few years.

"So in the next few years I want to see it be an amazing place for Christmas. People want to come here as a tourist and it brings everybody up," he added.

The armoury display is paid for with private money but the mayor is looking for more public-private partnerships.

He said events will begin November 15 and run until January.

An official announcement will be made in about a week when more details will be made public.
