The State of Emergency in Chatham-Kent will remain in place over the weekend.
Mayor Darrin Canniff said it will be reevaluated on Monday once road repairs and water flow improvements on Erie Shore Drive are finished.
"They're reinforcing the road in a number of ways. They're building it up as far as packing in dirt and putting in some additional paving in there and they're working on water flows as well," the mayor said.
Canniff said ensuring the area is safe and secure is the top priority.
"Barring any weather issues, we will be able to take the State of Emergency off and I'm not sure when we'll be able to open the road again. But when we open the road we'll know it'll be a secure and safe road to be driving on," Canniff said.
Canniff hopes provincial crews will assess the affected area shortly after the State of Emergency is lifted to determine if relief funding applies. The mayor added all levels of government are working to come up with a longterm solution to the flooding problem that has plagued the area for several years.
A State of Emergency was declared for Erie Shore Drive on August 27 after strong wind and waves battered the Lake Erie shoreline and caused significant flooding, forcing dozens of people to evacuate their lakefront homes.
