CK hosting another Household Hazardous Waste Day

Residents looking to get rid of some leftover pool chemicals, paint or batteries this fall, are encouraged to take advantage of Household Hazardous Waste Day in Chatham-Kent.

The local initiative is once again providing a safe option for residents to dispose of their household hazardous waste free of charge at one of three locations on September 14.

"Household Hazardous Waste Day is a joint project between Chatham-Kent and Waste Connections of Canada’s Ridge Landfill and is designed to ensure hazardous material is not placed in garbage containers where it could possibly injure collection workers or cause environmental damage," read a release sent by the municipality.

Before dropping off household hazardous materials, residents must make sure materials are clearly labelled and are in sealed containers no larger than 20 litres each. The maximum quantity that will be accepted is 50 litres in total. Residents are asked not to combine different products into a single container.

Some of the hazardous waste that falls under "acceptable materials" to drop-off include pool chemicals, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, paint, batteries, and biohazardous needles. For a full list of acceptable material, call (519) 360-1998 or click here.

The drop off locations will accept materials from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. and are located at municipal Public Works garages at 25 Creek Rd. in Chatham, 10137 Greenvalley Line in Chatham, and 4 Tower St. in Tilbury.
