Buxton Homecoming this weekend

Thousands of people will descend on North Buxton this weekend for the 96th annual Homecoming weekend.

People with roots in Buxton come from all over.

"When you walk down the street and you look at the variety of plates from different states and different provinces if just warms your heart," said co-organizer Shannon Prince. "To me when you see those connections being made with different family members that you didn't know that they had, or reconnecting, it's really gratifying."

Prince said the party starts Friday night.

"Starting with the history conference, which is the most academic part of the weekend. Then our usual Family Feud baseball tournament, we have 10 teams vying for that trophy. And then Saturday evening, the Party in the Park, which is sponsored by Buxton's Next Generation."

Admission to the Party in the Park is $10, but the party continues on Monday when a special guest stops by.

"Abraham Lincoln, believe it or not, he's coming to pay a visit and he'll also be in the parade," said Prince. "So he's going to be doing a presentation in the schoolhouse at 2 p.m. talking about slavery in the United States and Canada, and how he was involved with the abolition, the emancipation of slavery."

Prince said on Monday they will also try to set a world record for the longest Soul Train line.

"If you guys want to show off your moves, please join us at the park at 3 p.m. There was a group in the States that just did one a couple of days ago, but we don't know what that number is. But we intentionally are trying to beat 425."

Admission to the park on Monday is $5. For a full schedule of events, CLICK HERE.
