Flood warning extended, Hydro One issues safety tips

Hydro One is issuing some safety tips and suggestions for customers affected by flooding along Lake Erie with the shoreline expected to get pounded again over the next few days.

A release from the utility provider sent out Wednesday morning is urging customers who are in the flooded areas to call 1-800-434-1235 if water rises to a level where it's reaching electrical outlets, baseboard heaters, or the furnace.

If that's the case, Hydro One said it will send out a crew to safely disconnect power to the affected home, adding it is waiving disconnection and reconnection fees -- along with delivery fees -- for the disconnection period.

"Our hearts go out to all those affected by severe flooding along the shores of Lake Erie in southwestern Ontario," said the release, adding officials are "working with regional authorities to help ensure the safety of customers, emergency responders and our employees."

Hydro One is also reminding its customers that they need to contact a Licensed Electrical Contractor to conduct an evaluation and to make any repairs necessary before the power can be restored.

When it is safe for residents to return home, Hydro One will also have crews on standby to start the process of reconnecting electricity as long as a licensed electrical contractor has completed an inspection and any necessary repairs and has filed a permit with the Electrical Safety Authority. Customers should also ask their contractor for a copy of that permit for record-keeping and insurance purposes.

Flood warning extended for Lake Erie shoreline

It's not clear yet, though, how long it might take before it's safe for everyone to return home.

The Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority (LTVCA) issued an extended Flood Warning Wednesday morning, which is expected to be in effect until at least Friday, August 30.

Officials with the LTVCA said that's because the winds are forecasted to switch back to the southwest and climb above 30 kilometres per hour, possibly reaching gusts of 55 km/h. Those wind speeds could cause waves on Lake Erie to reach 1.5 metres in height again Wednesday afternoon.

As a result, flooding is expected to continue along Erie Shore Drive again Wednesday, causing additional damage to the homes along the lake and to the roadway there.

A localized state of emergency and voluntary evacuation notices remain in effect and officials are asking all non-emergency personnel to avoid the area.

The LTVCA also notes that other areas of the Lake Erie shoreline "are also at risk for shoreline damage, erosion and flooding in low lying properties".

Anyone who is affected by the flooding that needs assistance from the municipality should call 519 360 1998 for more information.
