Drug charges laid after bike, foot chase

Improper lighting on a bicycle tipped off police to a suspected criminal early Thursday morning.

Chatham-Kent police said an officer on general patrol saw a man riding a bike on Park Avenue in Chatham at around 3 a.m. Thursday without proper lights on it.

Police said when the officer attempted to stop the cyclist, the suspect took off before eventually ditching his bike by throwing it over a fence and then taking off on foot.

Investigators said the accused was arrested shortly after that on St. Anthony Street, adding that while he was being searched, officers found methamphetamine, fentanyl, and break-in tools in a backpack the man was carrying.

As a result, a 35-year-old Chatham man was charged with two counts of drug possession, one count of possession of break-in instruments, and one count of failing to comply with his probation order. He was taken into custody pending a bail hearing.
