Pair charged after police pull over pickup packed with plywood

Two people in their 30s are facing charges after police stopped a suspicious vehicle near an area that's under construction in Chatham.

Police said the investigation started when an off-duty officer spotted two suspicious people driving a truck in the area on Peach Tree Drive at around 4 a.m. Wednesday.

Officers were able to track down the vehicle and spotted it leaving the area at a "high rate of speed with the tailgate down and several sheets of plywood in the back."

Investigators said the 11 sheets of plywood that were found in the box of the truck have a combined estimated value of $500.

A 34-year-old Wallaceburg woman was arrested and charged with theft and possession of stolen property and was later released from custody pending a future court date.

The second suspect, a 38-year-old woman of no fixed address, was also arrested and charged with theft and possession of stolen property.

Police said the second woman was also wanted on an outstanding warrant for failing to attend court. She was taken into custody pending a bail hearing.

Break and enter at Subway restaurant

Chatham-Kent police are appealing to the public for some fresh tips after someone broke into the Subway restaurant on St. Clair Street in Chatham.

Police said they got the call at around 1:20 a.m. Wednesday after someone smashed the front glass doors of the building, causing about $1,000 in damage.

Officers believe the suspect is a white male in his early 20s, approximately 5'6" tall with a thin build.

He was last seen wearing a red bandana, a red ball cap, a black hoodie, baggy dark coloured pants, and white running shoes.

Alleged assault during driveway dispute

A 23-year-old Chatham woman is charged with assault after an argument in someone's driveway in Chatham took a violent turn.

Chatham-Kent police said the incident started at around 7 p.m. Tuesday when an argument broke out between a man and the occupants of a vehicle that had pulled into his driveway in Chatham.

The occupants were allegedly using his driveway as a parking spot at the time when the argument started. The woman allegedly got out and "struck the man" and the vehicle took off before police arrived.

Officers were able to identify a suspect in the case and arrested her a few hours later.

She was arrested, charged with assault, and released with conditions and a future court date.

Man arrested after allegedly stealing groceries

A 33-year-old Chatham man is charged with theft after allegedly stealing approximately $190 worth of groceries from the Sobeys in Blenheim.

Police said they responded to the call last week adding they were able to identify a suspect and arrested him in Chatham Tuesday afternoon.

The accused was charged with theft and later released with conditions and a future court date.

Tools reported stolen in Wallaceburg

Chatham-Kent police are looking for leads after someone allegedly stole a welder, two chainsaws, and various tools from a shed on Dufferin Avenue in Wallaceburg.

Police said the items were taken sometime over the past couple of days.
