United way gearing up for Rum Runners gala

A taste of the roaring '20s is coming to Chatham-Kent.

The Chatham-Kent United Way will be hosting a Rum Runners Gala in September to raise money for their upcoming fundraising campaign.

According to Margery Muharrem, individual donor and major gifts associate at the United Way of CK, the night will be a full celebration of all things speakeasy.

"It's definitely a prohibition themed event," she said. "We encourage all attendees to dress in period costume."

The United-Way's last big local gala was in 2013 with a similar theme. Much like last time, Muharrem said this year's event will feature music, food, fashion and some surprises straight out of the Great Gatsby.

"There will be a three-piece band that is playing that is very much on the genre of the 1920s and the 1930s," she explained. "We have a meal by Willow Ridge Golf Course. We have an awesome fashion show...we have some vehicles and planes from the era."

The Rum Runners gala takes place on  September 14 at the Chatham-Kent Municipal Airport. Tickets are $150 apiece with packages available for multiple ticket purchase and can be purchased by visiting the United Way of Chatham-Kent Facebook page or calling them directly at 519-354-0430.

Muharrem explained that all the money raised through the gala will stay directly in the municipality.

"It's going to our campaign, which will kick off at the beginning of September," she said. "So this will be a great event to bolster our monies. Everything's that's raised stays in Chatham-Kent."
