Planning Board seeks employers for upcoming job fair

There are plenty of empty slots available for employers that would like to participate in the third annual CK Works! Community Job Fair this fall.

Chatham-Kent’s Employment Resource Centres and the Chatham-Kent Workforce Planning Board are set to host a major job fair in Chatham on October 1, from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m.

Kristy Jacobs, project manager with the Chatham-Kent Workforce Planning Board, said they're aiming to have up to 70 employers registered for the event.

"It is kind of a two-fold event, some of it is job fair and some of it is career fair so it's a great opportunity to get the message out about your organization," she said.

So far, Jacobs said they have approximately 20 employers registered for the event. Employers can register to participate online, however, the employer registration period closes at 4:30 p.m. on September 6.

In regards to job seekers, Jacobs said they already have about 50 people registered so a good turnout to the job fair is anticipated.

"The first year that we held this [job fair] we had just over 400 job seekers, the second year [there were] over 700," she said. "Each year we have started to register a little bit earlier."

Jacobs said it's important for job seekers to update their resumes and prepare to meet with their potential employer. Ahead of the job fair, some helpful seminars will take place to help people who are striving for success. Details are still being ironed out but Jacobs said that information will be released soon.

"We have some job fair boot camps coming up on the second last week of September, which will give [job seekers] some of those tips and tidbits of what to do," said Jacobs. "We're also going to release a video series so people can watch that on our Facebook and social media."

Last year's Community Job Fair saw over 700 job seekers. Jacobs said the numbers continue to grow each year and the types of opportunities range in a variety of industry sectors.

"We have some construction, we have some customers service, we have some health care [positions]," she said. "There's just a variety of different sectors and if history is any indication, the last couple of years we have had basically [openings] in every sector."

The fall CK Works! Community Job Fair will be held at the John D Bradley Convention Centre in Chatham. Details and services provided by the CK Workforce Planning Board can be found here.
