Summer night market returns to Dresden

Dresden will be lively Saturday night as local residents and vendors gather for the second annual Summer Night Market.

Organizer Morena McDonald said about 70 vendors will be at Saturday's night market, along with eight food trucks, and a pop-up patio bar which will be serving craft beer from local breweries.

"People can go into our licenced area, grab a drink, grab some food and then watch the entertainment across the road at our stage," she said.

Some of the entertainment attendees can watch include duelling pianos, the Moondog Howlers, Dresden's Jacklyn Wills, and a fire show is expected to start around 9:30 p.m.

McDonald said it's tough to say how many people will attend this year's event but so far it looks good.

"Based on previous events... we estimate that last year we had 7,000 people," she said. "But our Facebook page has almost 4,000 people who have responded [to the event]."

She came up with the idea of hosting an event such as this while talking with some friends from Dresden.

"It's such a great town! The local businesses are really supportive and they enjoy being a part of an event," she said. "Together we came up with the idea to have a night market because there's nothing really similar [to it] in Chatham-Kent at the moment."

Vendors and businesses participating in the Summer Night Market will be open until 9 p.m. but the entertainment will continue until 11:30 p.m. Members involved with the Dresden Youth Centre will also be at the event holding a 50-50 draw.

The event is free to attend.

Drivers looking to manoeuvrer their way around Dresden should expect delays. A few roads will be closed to accommodate for the event. St. George Street South between Queen Street and Brown Street, North Street between Brown Street and Robinson Street, Main Street between St. George Street South and Tecumseh Street, and Brown Street between North Street and Centre Street will be closed on Saturday from 10 a.m. until midnight.

No detour routs will be posted but a recommended route is Queen Street – Water Street – Brock Street.
