Annual plowing match ready to hit CK fields

An annual tradition within the agricultural sector is about to plow through a farm in Chatham.

The 83rd annual Chatham-Kent Plowing Match gets underway Saturday at the farm of Peter Fisher, 9974 Gregory Line. The plowing match runs from 9:30 a.m until 3 p.m.

Stephanie Campbell, a secretary with the Chatham-Kent Plowmen's Association, said there are a few highlights that people can expect to see throughout the day.

"We are going to have tractor -- and hopefully horse plowing," she said. "There's going to be a food booth on-site for lunch and we have the Princess of the Furrow competition going on throughout the day as well."

For those who attended the International Plowing Match in Pain Court in the fall of 2018, Campbell said this event is essentially a smaller version of that with a heavier focus on plowing itself.

"It's mostly focussed on the plowing aspect. There are going to be a couple of vendors there but nothing to the extent of the tented city that [residents] would have seen last September," said Campbell.

A banquet will follow the daytime events at 5 p.m. at the Eben-Ezer Christian School, where plowing awards will be handed out. Chatham-Kent's Queen of the Furrow, Lauren McKerrall, will be at the banquet as a new 2019-2020 Princess of the Furrow is crowned.

Admission and parking at the plowing match will be free.
