Celebrating the end of slavery in Dresden

Uncle Tom's Cabin in Dresden is ready for another Emancipation Day celebration.

The historic site in Dresden is hosting the free event on Saturday, August 3rd from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.

"It's an annual celebration of hope and freedom, commemorating the end of slavery in the British Empire, which was on August, 1st, 1834," said Assistant Manager Brenda Lampkin.

She added that they have an exciting day planned.

"We have the Heritage Singers from Kitchener. They will have an interactive program, and they're very good, they've travelled all over the world. We also have an actor, he's going to do 'From Slave to Saviour' about Josiah Henson's life."

There will also be a musical performance by The Evolution of Jazz, and there are some family activities planned.

"We're going to do a family tree, which will be an activity that will involve the children and their parents," said Lampkin. "Then we'll have an African cooking demonstration from Chirisa Patience, who was there last year. We had so many comments that we brought her back again this year."

The museum will also be open during the event for free. For more information on Emancipation Day at the Uncle Tom's Cabin Historic Site, CLICK HERE.
