Break-in attempt foiled at closed KFC location

Chatham-Kent police are giving a shout-out to some local citizens who tipped off officers about a break-in at a local fast-food restaurant.

Investigators said someone called police at around 6 p.m. Thursday to report a possible break-and-enter in progress at the closed KFC restaurant on St. Clair Street in Chatham.

When officers showed up, they allegedly saw two people leaving the building with some electrical components, wiring, and piping.

A 21-year-old Chatham man and a 27-year-old Chatham man were both arrested and charged with break and enter and possession of stolen property. They were both later released with conditions and a future court date.

Police said it is a good reminder that if you see or hear anything suspicious, you should call it in.

Suspect used garage door opener during break-in

Police are reminding you to keep your garage door openers locked up if you don't want some unwanted guests snooping around your place.

Officers said that's what happened sometime late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning after someone broke into three vehicles in the driveway of a residence on Sunset Avenue in Chatham.

Police said the suspect found a garage door opener inside one of the vehicles and used it to open the garage before taking off with a black Longboard skateboard, an orange and grey water rescue knife, and a full face fire mask.

The total value of the stolen goods is estimated at $1,200.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Constable Gary Oriet at garyor@chatham-kent.ca or 519-436-6600 extension #87152. Anonymous callers may call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) and may be eligible for a cash reward.

Woman arrested after allegedly yelling at neighbour

A 39-year-old Chatham woman who was released from police custody at the end of May is finding herself in more trouble with the law now.

Police said when the woman was released on May 24, she was ordered not to communicate with a specific woman who lives in the same apartment building as her and she was also ordered to let police know at least 24 hours ahead of time if she was going to change her address.

Officers said the woman allegedly broke the first condition earlier this week when she walked by her neighbour's patio multiple times while yelling at her.

The woman is also accused of moving to a different apartment without telling police ahead of time.

She was arrested Thursday night and taken into custody pending a bail hearing.
