Cystic Fibrosis fundraiser falls on Friday

After raising over $5,000 in 2018, a local sports club is ready for another charitable fundraiser.

The Chatham-Kent Lawn Bowling club is hosting the second-ever "Lawn Summer Nights" in the region. It is a non-competitive tournament aiming to raise money for families affected by Cystic Fibrosis.

The tournament is part of a national initiative to increase awareness around the disease, said Brock McGregor, a councillor in the municipality.

"This is one of [Cystic Fibrosis Canada's] signature events," said McGregor. "You see big multi-day tournaments in Toronto and Calgary and some of these small pop-up events in communities like ours."

Last year was the first time the event was held in Chatham-Kent -- it took place at Tecumseh Park and tickets were sold out. The event raised over $5,000 and McGregor said people began signing up for this year's instalment almost instantly.

"I think it was great exposure for the whole lawn-bowling thing and it was a really fun night to be in Tecumseh Park," said McGregor. "We dealt with some rain last year and somehow still it pulled off and it was a really great night."

There are still spots left for this year's event which will take place on July 26. People sign up in teams of four and are expected to raise a collective amount of $200 per team. Those who don't want to participate but still want to watch will be charged a $10 admission fee, said McGregor. All proceeds are going to Cystic Fibrosis Canada.

"It's sponsored by Steam Whistle, sponsored by Boston Pizza so there are food and beverage," he said. "There's some live music -- Two From Tuesday and Cellar Door will be there so really it's a good time in Tecumseh Park for a good cause."
