Chatham restaurant shows off new expansion

A locally owned and operated restaurant is looking forward to the future after unveiling an expansion.

On Wednesday morning, Chatham's Breakfast House & Grille Churrascaria held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new take-out section of the restaurant located at Grand Avenue East. Chef and operator Brian Machado, along with his sister Melanie Vinagreiro, said they were excited to see the expansion to finally come to life.

"We worked really hard for this," said Vinagreiro. "It's been a long time coming and we're just happy to do this and be able to say 'yes' to all the take out."

Machado said the expansion will help with the growing demand for take-out orders and be a way to better accommodate customers. He believes separating to-go orders from the dine-in portion of the restaurant will bring an easier flow to the business.

"The people that are coming in for take-out, they just want to come in, get out, get their food, go home and be with their family. So that's what we want to provide and that's the step that we're taking forward," explained Machado.

In addition to several family and community members, Mayor Darrin Canniff, Councillor Amy Finn and Councillor Karen Kirkwood-Whyte were also on hand for the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Canniff thanked the family for all they've done in the community over the last several years.

"Brian's being pretty humble here about all of the wonderful things he and his family have done in the community over all these years. This is a small token of our appreciation to show up for something like this," Canniff said. "This is amazing, I love that you're doing this. I love the expansion...this is symbolic of what we want to see here in Chatham-Kent."

The restaurant, known for their Portuguese churrasco chicken, originally opened in 2007. Machado said they have the residents to thank for their growth so far.

"It's just a great feeling to know that Chatham-Kent, we give and they give back. We just love it. We love our community, it's great," said Machado. "Its' a small little addition to our business but it's a big thing because now we can provide a service that we couldn't previously provide the community."

As for what the next decade years will bring for the business, Vinagreiro said they are always working on new ideas.

"Just keep your eyes open," she said. "We always have something in our back pocket and Brian always has things coming out and its always a surprise."
