Drugs found during traffic stop

Two local men are facing charges after a traffic stop resulted in a drug seizure.

CK police said a vehicle was pulled over on Dufferin Avenue in Wallaceburg on Sunday at around 7 a.m., after an officer ran the plate and found that the vehicle belonged to a suspended driver.  While the driver of the vehicle was not the owner, he turned out to be suspended from driving as well.  A passenger in the vehicle was also found to be breaching the curfew condition of his bail.

During a search of the driver, police found a number of suspected drugs including hydromorphone, oxycodone, heroin and suboxone.

A 35-year-old Walpole Island man is now charged with five counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking. He was held for a bail hearing and later released with a future court date of July 25, 2019. A 35-year-old Wallaceburg man also was charged with failing to comply with a recognizance and held pending a bail hearing.

Windshield smashed, man charged 

A Chatham man is facing charges after he allegedly threw a wooden plank through the windshield of a parked vehicle.

CK police said the windshield was smashed at around 10:12 p.m. on Sunday at a house on Stanley Avenue in Chatham, causing around $1500 in damages. The man left the area but was arrested by police a short distance away.

The 22-year-old Chatham man is now charged with mischief under $5,000. He is scheduled to be in court on July 30.

Youth assaulted while with grandfather

A Kent Bridge man is in trouble with the law after he allegedly assaulted his young grandson.

Chatham-Kent police were called after the youth was assaulted while under the care of his grandfather. While the youth was not physically injured, Chatham-Kent Children’s Services was contacted.

A warrant was issued for the grandfather's arrest and on Sunday at around 11 p.m., police arrested the 49-year-old Kent Bridge man and charged him with assault. He has been released with a court date on July 30.

Alleged shoplifter busted in Chatham

While he might have been able to get away from store employees, an alleged shoplifter found out the hard way that he couldn't escape the police.

Employees at a store on a Grand Avenue West in Chatham chased a shopper out the store after he allegedly stole a number of items, but were unable to catch him.  However, police were called and officers caught up to the man not far down the road.

A bag full of stolen items from the store and additional stolen merchandise from another business on Grand Avenue West was found during the man's arrest.

A 23-year-old Chatham man is now charged with two counts of possession of stolen property under $5,000, two counts of theft under $5,000 and one count of escaping lawful custody. He was released with a future court date of August 6.
